چکیده

We develop a general model of lending in the presence of endogenous borrowing constraints. Borrowing constraints arise because borrowers face limited liability and debt repayment cannot be perfectly enforced. In the model, the dynamics of debt are closely linked with the dynamics of borrowing constraints. In fact, borrowing constraints must satisfy a dynamic consistency requirement: The value of outstanding debt restricts current access to short term capital, but is itself determined by future access to credit. This dynamic consistency is not guaranteed in models of exogenous borrowing constraints, where the ability to raise short term capital is limited by some prespecified function of debt. We characterize the optimal default-free contract -which minimizes borrowing constraints at all historiesand derive implications for firm growth, survival, leverage, and debt maturity. The model is qualitatively consistent with stylized facts on the growth and survival of firms. Comparative statics with respect to technology and default constraints are derived. JEL Classification Numbers: D92, F34, G31, G32, G35.

Optimal Lending Contracts with Long Run Borrowing Constraints

This paper discusses two ways to amend the optimal lending contract under asymmetric information studied in Clementi and Hopenhayn (2006) to change its long-run implications so that firm growth and exit driven by borrowing constraints exist in the long run. One way assumes that the entrepreneur has a lower discount factor than the bank, and the other assumes the bank has limited commitment. The...

Dynamic Lending in the Ghatak/Stiglitz/Weiss adverse selection model, with Comparison to Group Lending

We derive an optimal dynamic lending contract in a simple adverse selection model with limited commitment on the borrower side. An optimal contract involves “penalty” rates after a default, and favorable rates after a success. It also charges higher rates for first-time borrowers than for repeat borrowers, as in “relationship” lending. We compare the efficiency of a group lending contract (of t...

Customer Concentration and bank loan contracts: Evidence from the Tehran Stock Exchange

Objective: The variables of customer concentration and bank loan contracts can affect corporate finance activities, and customer concentration may increase corporate returns. Methods: Under this study, the relationship between customer concentration and bank loan contracts have been investigated first and then the moderating effect of financial status variables and accounts payable on relation...

Repayment versus Investment Conditions and Exclusivity in Lending Contracts

Repayment versus Investment Conditions and Exclusivity in Lending Contracts Lenders condition future loans on some index of past performance. Typically, banks condition future loans on repayments of earlier obligations whilst international organizations (official lenders) condition future loans on the implementation of some policy action (‘investment’). We build an agency model that accounts fo...
